Alder wood machines, nails, screws and glues well, can take paint and stain to become good products. Alder is also an ideal wood for turning and sanding. The wood is durable, dries easily and has a good dimensional stability after drying. Only old growth Alder has the heartwood. There are no clear distinction between the heartwood and sapwood. Alder wood also has relatively straight grains and an even surface.

Main uses: Having even grains and medium density, Alder wood is easy to work with. Alder wood is used to manufacture small items such as: brush handles, spools, trays, soles and wood boxes. The wood planes and sands easily, takes paint and finishes well. Besides, Alder can be quite fuzzy but it is not likely to split. Alder wood is also used to make decorating items, signboards, veneer, plywood. Because of these properties and a cheaper price then other hardwoods, the wood is widely used in manufacturing furniture and cabinets.
